Coup in Mauritania

Written by

I was personally interested in learning more about the recent coup in Mauritania. I worked on a few projects for the country when I was at the World Bank a few years ago.

When I was there I blogged about the Heavily Indebted Poor Country and have tracked the country for some time. It’s unfortunate that the 3 millioninhabitants could not have used a more democratic way to oust their President Maaoya Sid’Ahmed Taya. This coup, I think, has serious implications for the future oil production in the country and leads to uncertainty regarding suspected Islamist radicals and their possible link to terrorism.
